Help! Dentists scare me!

March 25, 2010

Why don’t most people make their usual trip to the dentist? There can be a number of reasons. First of all, if you haven’t been in a while, there might be a fear lurking in the back of your mind that you might have some cavities or other problems. A regular cleaning is one thing, but what if they have to do a root canal or some other big procedure? This fear can keep you away from the dentist for years at a stretch.

Fear of the dentist isn’t a joke; for some people it is a serious problem. It can be just as crippling as fear of flying, fear of heights or other common phobias. It can cause serious anxiety attacks and mental problems. Because of this fear, you may avoid the dentist like the plague. However, not seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups will only cause more problems, as gum disease and cavities go unchecked and untreated.

There’s a new way to get over dentist-phobia. It’s called “Sedation Dentistry,” and it was developed with people who are scared of the dentist in mind. The idea is to get the patient as calm as possible so that they can sit in the chair with no problem. In recent years, sedation dentistry has enabled lots of people to finally face the dentist, with the result that they’re able again to take care of their teeth.

Dr. Grabiak offers 3 forms of sedation dentistry. IV sedation gives a deep state of relaxation. A sedative pill allows for a relaxed state. Most patients nap through the visit. Nitrous oxide is the 3rd. Denver patients who undergo nitrous oxide sedation dentistry often fall asleep and experience some degree of amnesia

Dr. Grabiak understands these concerns, and offers sedation dentistry to his patients for safe and comfortable dental care.
